Introduction

Alpha Omega’s journey to success is built on a steadfast focus on our mission: “to ensure the nation’s continued global leadership.” This commitment is deeply rooted in our DNA and is best exemplified by our customized flywheel concept. Inspired by Jim Collins’ “Good to Great,” our flywheel is not merely a strategic framework but a living, breathing representation of our values, goals, and operational ethos.

The Flywheel Concept

Imagine a massive, 5,000-pound flywheel on an axle. Your task is to spin it as fast as possible. Initially, with great effort, it moves almost imperceptibly. But as you persist, the flywheel gradually gains momentum. Each turn builds on the last, and soon, it starts moving faster with less effort until it achieves unstoppable momentum. When asked which push caused the breakthrough, it’s clear it was the cumulative effect of all the pushes. This process, which might look like a dramatic breakthrough from the outside, is actually a gradual, consistent effort from the inside.

Alpha Omega has adopted this “flywheel” approach to align our employees with our goals and mission, achieving success through continuous, collective effort in a unified direction. This approach ensures that every action taken contributes to the overall progress, creating a powerful force that propels us forward.

Step 1. Ensure Customer and Company Mission Alignment

Mission focus is central to Alpha Omega. Our name and logo reflect our commitment to delivering end-to-end solutions that are comprehensive and mission focused. We view IT not just as a tool but as a pivotal force that supports and enhances an agency’s mission.

Our Founder & CEO, Gautam Ijoor, envisioned an organization that not only generates profit but also creates significant value and gives back to our nation. This vision is embodied in our focus on national security and our specialization in three key domains: Homeland Security (Department of Homeland Security – DHS), Foreign Affairs (Department of State – DOS, Millennium Challenge Corporation – MCC, US Agency of International Development – USAID), and Climate Sciences (US Department of Agriculture – USDA and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration – NOAA).

To stay true to this mission, the first step in our flywheel involves ensuring all opportunities align with this vision. Every contract we pursue is evaluated for how well it enhances our understanding of the mission of the federal departments or agencies we serve.

To deepen our understanding of our customers’ missions, we often hire former long-term federal employees who bring valuable insights and expertise regarding the government’s needs and solutions.

In every engagement, we ask ourselves two critical questions: What is the mission of the agency? And what value, business domain-wise, do we bring to this opportunity that is tied to the customer mission? We understand that not all customer problems can be solved by implementing technology alone. Solving most customer problems requires an exceptional understanding of the business domain and the customer mission.

Step 2. Expand Federal Contracts with Mission-aligned Agencies

In 2016, we began our journey in the federal contracting space by acquiring Trusted Mission Solutions. While these contracts increased our profits, they didn’t align with our mission. To start turning our flywheel, we identified agencies with missions that aligned with ours. By 2021, we strategically decided not to bid on certain profitable contracts. We transitioned employees who wanted to stay with Alpha Omega to other contracts and invested in their development well before the recompete. We expanded our sales leadership with individuals who had grown companies in the customers we aimed to serve. This allowed us to win work in desired agencies without feeling the pain of not bidding on unsuitable contracts.

Although our revenue initially dipped, we persevered. Today, we focus on a select group of customers whose missions align with Alpha Omega’s mission. This focus has allowed us to build stronger customer relationships and increase our investments to become more integrated with our existing customers. It has also enabled us to clearly communicate the ‘why’ behind Alpha Omega, helping us attract the best and brightest talent to lead the organization.

We are not a company that simply does what our customers ask us to do; we do what our customers need us to do. This does not mean we mutiny on customers’ projects. Often, customers ask us to solve the symptoms of a problem. By having a thorough understanding of the mission and business domain, we provide more complete and lasting solutions.

Step 3. Excel in Contracts Talent

Our commitment to our employees begins with a strong cultural foundation. We nurture a work environment where every team member feels valued and empowered. By promoting a culture of learning, respect, and collaboration, we ensure high retention rates and foster a sense of belonging and purpose among our employees.

While our Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), Tanja Guerra and her team play a key role in succession planning, career plans, and Management by Objectives (MBOs), it’s the Chief Operations Officer Mike Deutsch, our Business Unit Leads and the VP of Customer Success Michelle Traxel who, together with Talent Acquisition, provide opportunities for employees to grow in their career paths at Alpha Omega. Our CHRO’s leadership ensures that our workforce is well-prepared and aligned with our long-term goals. We do not merely transition incumbents when we win a contract; we invest in the leadership, specific technical skills, and knowledge of all our employees and team members.

The flywheel turns when we provide a staffing solution on a contract that includes a mix of labor, including incumbents from a previous contractor, Alpha Omega employees from other contracts, and fresh talent from schools and universities. While selectively retaining incumbents, we build a foundation of SMEs who have an exceptional understanding of the mission. Alpha Omega employees from other contracts help implement standard processes developed over several decades, while fresh talent ensures that we provide services that sometimes question the status quo. Lesser experienced staff are trained in technology, while more experienced staff from other contracts are trained in understanding the customer mission.

A job at Alpha Omega goes beyond a mere paycheck and is not merely associated with a contract but a long-term career opportunity. Every employee and team member are given a defined career path. Alpha Omega was created not only to give back to this country but also to provide career opportunities to others. We take tremendous satisfaction in mentoring and developing our team members.

Step 4. Engineer Innovative Tech Solutions

Our commitment to our employees begins with a strong cultural foundation. We nurture a work environment where every team member feels valued and empowered. By promoting a culture of learning, respect, and collaboration, we ensure high retention rates and foster a sense of belonging and purpose among our employees.

Innovative solutions, especially when converted to protected Intellectual Property, help promote customer entanglement and increase the customer engagement lifecycle. In this step, our Chief Technology Officer Nitin Vartak and his team help build our Intellectual Property, capabilities, and mission-focused solutions. Alpha Omega’s emphasis on innovation is exemplified by our development of proprietary solutions like ‘A2O,’ which dramatically reduces the time required for customers to obtain their authority to operate. By continuously developing and integrating new intellectual property, we enhance our capabilities and offer our customers unique, cost-effective solutions.

Our best-in-class capabilities in digital transformation, AI & Data Management, and Cybersecurity are pivotal to our flywheel. We provide full-lifecycle cybersecurity solutions and support AI, data management, and vital digital transformations across various federal agencies. These competencies ensure that we remain indispensable partners to our customers, safeguarding their operations and enabling their success.

Step 5. Enforce Accountability for Sustainable Growth

Our ambitious vision to become a $1 billion business by August 2030 drives our strategic initiatives. This goal, coupled with our Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) to reach $400 million in enterprise value by August 2026, sets a clear, aspirational target for the organization. We have broken down this vision into intermediate milestones, ensuring steady progress and sustained momentum.

Our approach to growth is grounded in continuous improvement and value creation. We consistently identify and implement value on existing and proposed contracts, enhancing our service delivery and expanding our market presence. This commitment to value creation is a vital element of our flywheel, ensuring that we remain competitive and relevant in a dynamic market.

At Alpha Omega, we’ve revolutionized our leadership approach with a framework inspired by the Entrepreneurial Operating System (EOS). This dynamic system is grounded in two core principles: defining clear accountability and empowering our team at every level.

Our framework ensures every team member knows their role and responsibilities, fostering a culture of ownership and excellence. It features structured weekly meetings to review key metrics (measurables), action items (to-dos), quarterly priorities (rocks), and solve issues (IDS). These meetings are not just routine check-ins; they are pivotal moments where we align our efforts, assess our progress, and refine our strategies. Above all, they promote accountability.

In this step, by consistently reviewing priorities, metrics, core values, and individual roles, we create a powerful force to turn the flywheel. This continuous cycle of evaluation and adjustment keeps our organization agile, focused, and driven toward our goals. At Alpha Omega, leadership is not just about managing—it’s about inspiring and empowering every team member to contribute their best.

Conclusion

The Alpha Omega flywheel concept is a testament to our unwavering focus on our mission, our dedication to our employees, our commitment to innovation, and our pursuit of sustainable growth. By saying no to distractions and opportunities that do not align with our core principles, we have created a robust framework that drives success and ensures the continued global leadership of our nation.

Alpha Omega’s journey from inception to a rapidly growing, mission-driven organization underscores the power of a well-crafted flywheel. As we continue to build on this foundation, we remain committed to our mission and to the principles that have brought us this far. Together, we will propel Alpha Omega forward, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of our industry and continue to make a meaningful impact on the world.
