NOAA NESDIS Integrated Information Services (NIIS-II) Transition Page

  • About NIIS - II

The National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) is dedicated to providing timely access to global environmental data from satellites and other sources to promote, protect, and enhance the Nation’s economy, security, environment, and quality of life. To fulfill its responsibilities, NESDIS acquires and manages the Nation’s operational environmental satellites, operates the NESDIS National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI), provides data and information services including Earth system monitoring, performs official assessments of the environment, and conducts related research.

The NESDIS Assistant Chief Information Officer -Satellites (ACIO-S) currently operates and maintains the NESDIS Headquarters Information Technology (IT) Support Local Area Network (NESDIS HQ ITS LAN) providing IT infrastructure support to the NESDIS Enterprise.

The NESDIS ACIO-S has designed and installed a new infrastructure and expanded the NESDIS HQ ITS LAN (i.e., the NOAA5006 system) boundary, which includes items such as Networks, LAN, Voice over IP (VoiP), and Security.  The NOAA5006 current IT services Contractor is supporting this effort.  This provides the opportunity to address the need to standardize infrastructure and “core” administrative services across the NESDIS Enterprise and allow for a more cohesive, scalable, and cost-effective delivery of administrative services to the enterprise.  The expected benefit is a more cost-effective way to provide IT services across NESDIS using common core services and shared support.

Additionally, the Office of Oceanic & Atmospheric Research Headquarters (OAR HQ) has a need for IT operations and maintenance (O&M) support for their NOAA3000 system that provides services to all of its OAR HQ Staff and Program Offices located at the NOAA Silver Spring Metro Center (SSMC) Campus.

IT support for NOAA5006, JPSS, and OAR is provided by Team Alpha Omega under the NESDIS Integrated Information Services (NIIS-II) contract.
